    A Call for Therapeutic Groups!

For quite some time, I have had difficulty finding groups to which to refer clients. In speaking with other therapists, I have realized it is not just me.

So this is a call to all IE-CAMFT members to answer a need for Therapeutic groups. Some consider facilitating a group to be a specialty or some think of it almost as an art form. However you view them, there is a definite need for therapeutic groups. As you know, groups classically are known to provide healing in a way that cannot be replicated in individual therapy.

There is such a lack of real-life connection in this technologically-based culture that it is difficult for people to find community. Without community, clients cannot do the homework assigned to them that is relationship based.

Groups can help provide the client:

    1.     A way to meet need for connection

    2.     A social community of reflection

    3.     A sense that s/he is not alone in dealing with a particular issue

    4.     A helpful transition after brief therapy

    5.     Another therapeutic perspective by working with a different therapist

From the standpoint of the therapist, groups can reduce stress and be more energizing for both therapists as they are not working alone.  And of course, insurance companies like the use of groups.

    Classic Groups to consider:

    1.     Domestic Violence

    2.     Grief

    3.     Divorce

    4.     Parenting

    5.     Social Anxiety

    6.     Coping with toxic family relationships

    7.     Coping with any various transitional situations

    8.     Blended families

    9.     Young mothers

    10.  At-risk youth

    11.  Parents of at-risk youth

    12.  Support

    13.  Anything you specialize in

If you are currently facilitating a group or if you plan to start one, please let us know so we can post your information for referrals.

You are invited to participate in a unique delegation of Mental Health Practitioners engaging in professional
interactions with our Cuban counterparts in the Cuban cities of Havana, Cienfuegos, and Matanzas beginning
on May 16, 2014. Our goal is to create meaningful professional relationships with Cuban Psychiatrists,
Psychologists,  and College Professors. These exchanges are held in small intimate settings providing an
opportunity for open and frank discussions. Our delegation will be comprised of Mental Health Professionals,
and their guests, traveling under the auspices of Cal Cuba Arts Project specializing in travel to Cuba since
    2001.

In addition to professional exchanges there will be visits to local cultural sites as you step back in time to
a culture reminiscent of the life in the USA in the 1950s. Beyond the traditional tourist corridors we will be
taking a fascinating look at the city of Havana through the eyes of a local architect and historian, enjoying a visit to the home of Ernest Hemingway and a private home studio tour with a Cuban independent artist. In Havana we will visit a monument to the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1963. We will complete the day with a colorful evening of authentic Cuban cuisine and vibrant island culture.

Our delegation will travel in modern air-conditioned buses and be provided with a native bilingual guide. A special guest program is also available to those not attending the professional exchange meetings. To help you get a taste of what our activities will be like and a quick glimpse at the culture while in Cuba here’s a 2 minute video: http://vimeo.com/84226141 This is my fifth delegation to Cuba in over 20 years of international travel and one of the most exciting. Cal Cuba Arts Project has extensive background and experience in Cuba and will help facilitate our delegations entry into many unusual and out-‐of-‐the-‐way places not experienced by most travelers. The delegation departs Miami, by air, on May 16, 2014 to Cienfuegos and returns to Miami on May 24, 2014.

One more exciting piece that was just added is that you can receive 14 hours of continuing education credit if you are a Marriage and Family Therapist or a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. For further information call me anytime at 805.495.0375 or email  me at howard.levitt@verizon.net or Fabiola Ortiz 310.977.9681 with any questions.

    ACHIEVE

    February 25, 2014

Demand Health Care Plans to Pay for Telehealth!

Numerous California bills have been passed since 2006 that require health care plans and insurers to pay for telehealth services in lieu of in-person treatment. However, some plans continue to misinterpret the law and refuse to pay for telehealth services.

CAMFT needs your help to force the plans to adhere to the law! If you have received a denial for payment based on your services being provided via telehealth (versus in person), we want to hear from you! The success of this grassroots effort is dependent on the feedback we receive from the membership by March 10, 2014.

Please email the following information to Cathy Atkins, Deputy Executive Director:

    • Name of health care plan or insurer
    • Type of service
    • General date
    • Any stated reason as to “why” your claim was denied

    Thank you for your help!

"Why I'm endorsing the SaveCAMFT team" -
    Daniel Sonkin

    Dear Colleagues:

It is with great enthusiasm and excitement that I am endorsing all five SaveCAMFT candidates for CAMFT Board of Directors!

    Laura Strom - President-Elect

Jürgen Braungardt  - Chief Financial Officer

    Bob Casanova - Director-at-Large

    Patricia Ravitz - Director-at-Large

    Chris Trailer - Director-at-Large

In a recent meeting with the five SaveCAMFT candidates I continued to be very impressed by their knowledge, experience and their love of our profession. But most importantly, each candidate is unquestionably committed to making sure CAMFT continues to be the MFT trade association in California.

After a record-breaking, landslide bylaws vote in December, that restored CAMFT to its original purpose advocating for MFTs, the membership made it crystal clear that they want CAMFT to be the California trade association for Marriage and Family Therapists.

In the aftermath of the 2013 bylaws fiasco, it is obvious to me that more needs to be done to rebuild trust in the leadership of CAMFT.  I believe the SaveCAMFT slate of candidates will work to restore that trust through transparent leadership, fiscal responsibility and collaboration with the members.  Under their leadership CAMFT will once again be laser-focused on maintaining MFTs' strength and influence in California, and in Washington, DC.  They all support collaboration with other mental health professions and their continued inclusion in our organization by maintaining the associate member category.  I believe they will contribute to a much-needed change in the current culture of the CAMFT leadership.

We need to support these amazing candidates, so they can run a successful campaign,  and be elected to the board where they will work hard for CAMFT members. There are two ways you can demonstrate your support for them:

    • Spreading the word
    • Making a contribution to their campaign

We all need to get involved so we not only elect these incredible individuals, but that we do so with another record-breaking victory that sends them to the board with the mandate they will need.

Let's get the largest voter turnout for a board election in CAMFT's history! You can help make this happen.

    1. Go through your address book and send this flyer to all your colleagues (and post it where MFTs gather).
    2. You can also help these candidates by contributing to their campaign here.

If each of you contribute just $25, the SaveCAMFT candidates will be able to send out multiple e-blasts, including a video, to explain to the entire membership what is at stake in this election and introduce each SaveCAMFT candidate. They need our help to cover these costs. So, I urge you to please support the SaveCAMFT candidates with a generous donation of $25 or more.

Together we can make CAMFT the strong, MFT advocacy organization we deserve!

P.S. Please watch/share this video of Laura Strom, our President-Elect candidate speaking out powerfully about the bylaws fiasco and the role the SaveCAMFT team will play when we successfully elect them to the CAMFT Board!

    December 12, 2013

The following notes highlight discussion and action from the December 7-8, 2013, CAMFT Board of Directors meeting in San Francisco.

(Note: On Friday evening, December 6th, the CAMFT Board met informally with leaders from the San Francisco Chapter.   These “Board-to-Board” gatherings allow for interaction between state and local leaders when the CAMFT Board is meeting in a chapter’s area.)

    December 2013 Bylaws Vote
The Board of Directors discussed the results of the December 2013 membership vote to repeal the July 2013 bylaws and reinstate the June 2009 bylaws. A total of 3,745 valid ballots were received, which exceeded the five percent quorum requirement (960 ballots). Of the valid ballots, 3,603 ballots approved repealing the 2013 bylaws and reinstating the 2009 bylaws, and 142 did not.  The vote passed based on more than two-thirds (2/3) of the valid ballots voting in favor of the proposal.   The December 2013 bylaws are now available on the CAMFT website.

    Executive Report

Cathy Atkins reported on staffing and operations at CAMFT. The Board received reports on The Therapist, continuing education programs, marketing and public relations, and the CAMFT website. Ms. Atkins reported CAMFT has now reached over 31,000 members.

Ms. Atkins discussed new live and online programs in 2014. Live programs include: two Law & Ethics seminars, four CAMFT Connects member forums, two Advanced DSM-5 seminars. Online programs include new webcasts for  DSM-5, law and ethics, and supervision,. Also starting in 2014, CAMFT will offer free malpractice insurance for student members.

The Board discussed the recent shortage of available attorneys to answer member calls due to a staff shortage based on current medical leaves. Ms. Atkins reported CAMFT recently hired two new members to the Legal Department, Alain Montgomery and Irene Chung. Ms. Atkins stated she was hopeful that the long wait times would be minimized by the end of the year.

Ms. Atkins reported on the planning and preparation for CAMFT’s golden anniversary. Staff is developing innovate ways to commemorate CAMFT’s 50th anniversary and engage members in the celebration, beginning in January.  Included are discounted live events, free webcasts by Affinity Partners, historical fun-facts, and pioneer statements in The Therapist, and a celebration at the Annual Conference.

Ms. Atkins discussed the status of CAMFT’s application to the BBS as a Continuing Education Provider Approval Agency.  CAMFT recently hired Miriam Toscano as the Program Coordinator. Ms. Toscano will work with a taskforce to develop Agency guidelines and procedures, which will be submitted to the BBS in July 2014 as part of CAMFT’s application.

In closed session, the Board and Ms. Atkins discussed Executive Director Jill Epstein’s medical leave and long-term planning. Ms. Epstein is expected to return by March 2014. The Board also conducted Ms. Atkins performance review.

    2014/2015 Board of Directors Election
Ms. Atkins reported on the upcoming Board of Directors election, specifically the logistics of the election given the new December 2013 bylaws. To learn more about the timeframe of the 2014/2015 election, please see the CAMFT website.

    Legislation/Advocacy
Ms. Atkins reported on the exciting news that CAMFT secured a House of Representative sponsor for CAMFT’s Medicare bill, Mike Thompson (D-Santa Rosa). Rep. Thompson agreed to introduce the bill after an incredible grassroots effort by the members within his district. CAMFT now has bi-partisan bills in both the House (HR 3662) and the Senate (S 562).

The Board worked together to choose the legislative priorities for 2014. The proposals for this year’s legislation were developed by the legal department based on member concerns and issues presented over the last year. Proposed legislation will be drafted and the CAMFT lobbyist will work to find authors for the various bills by the deadline for bill introduction in February 2014.

The Board reviewed updates about the BBS and state/federal legislation.   CAMFT-sponsored SB 282 was signed by the Governor. CAMFT selected Mike Thompson (D-Santa Rosa) as the federal Legislator of the Year, and Mark Wyland (R-San Diego) as the state Legislator of the Year.

The Board also discussed the Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) and its involvement in the implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). CAMFT has made it a priority to be a visible and active stakeholder within the DHCS as the ACA is being implemented.

    Chapters
After reviewing the amendments proposed by the Chapters to the chapter policy, the Board approved the policy as submitted by staff, with Chapter amendments. The content of the policy will be transferred into a chapter agreement, which will be distributed to the Chapters early in 2014 for review and discussion at the upcoming Chapter Leadership Conference (CLC).

The Board also approved one-time grants of up to $1,000 each to assist Chapters in complying with the new chapter agreement.

The Board discussed the upcoming CLC on February 28-March 1, 2014. The Board was also notified that the Chapter Advisory Council had selected a recipient of the Chapter Excellence Award (a $1,000 stipend), which will be announced at the CLC.

    Finance
The Board approved the proposed 2014 budget. Victoria Campbell, Chief Financial Officer, pointed out the proposed budget showed an operational surplus for the first time in over seven years. The Board commended staff on this achievement.

    CAMFT Connects Forums
The Board discussed the positive feedback and overall success of the recent CAMFT Connects member forums on October 12, and October 19, 2013. The Board approved four additional CAMFT Connects forums in 2014, with the hope that the forums will be in geographically diverse locations.

    Committee Reports
The Board received reports from the following Committees: Strategic Planning Committee, Finance Committee, Ethics Committee, CE Provider Approval Program Task Force, Purview Committee and Clinical Editorial Committee.

    Next Board Meeting
The next Board meeting will be held March 14-15, 2014 in Washington, D.C. For more details, please visit the Board of Directors section of the CAMFT website.
