WORKING WITH SURVIVORS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

DESCRIPTIVE NARRATIVE:

The presentation discusses the definition and types of domestic violence; the impact of domestic violence on children; and the power and control wheel. The presentation will address how to assess for domestic violence during intake assessment, and how to create a treatment plan that fits survivors’ needs.

The presentation will provide up-to-date information so that therapists will learn Definitions and Types of Domestic Violence; Evidence based support for teaching clients the Power and Control Wheel; The Impact of DV on children (ethical obligation of therapists for reporting “reasonable belief of harm or danger”); and Diagnostic and Statistical Diagnosis assessments typically related to domestic violence.

OBJECTIVES:

1. Attendees will learn three or more theories of dynamics leading to risk of domestic violence.
2. Attendees will learn the Domestic violence cycle (Circle of Violence) and psycho-dynamics of various types of domestic violence.
3. Participants will learn safety planning in the Inland Empire.
4. Participants will understand the use of referrals and resources with special considerations for cultural considerations.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER:

Muriel Casamayor is a first-generation Afrolatina psychotherapist. She was born and raised in Peru until the age of 15 years.  Muriel obtained her B.S. at Cal State Los Angeles, and her M.A. at Hope International University. Muriel is a Spanish Speaking Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in California. She specializes in serving BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) folks living with depression, anxiety, and trauma. She utilized EMDR, Strength Based Therapy, and Harm Reduction theories as part of her therapy style. She is also a facilitator and speaker.   Muriel understands the journey of immigrating to another country and rewriting your own narrative.
