This presentation will outline the evolution of psychotherapy through the lens of three primary modalities: Depth Psychotherapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). It will review the major theoretical principles of each approach and the theoretical differences between depth psychology and behaviorism. It will introduce participants to the framework of ACT, and will define the six core processes and the overarching goal of psychological flexibility. Finally, it will discuss ACT as a modality which integrates strengths from both Depth Psychotherapy and CBT

Learning Objectives

1. Identify the therapeutic goals of Analytical Psychotherapy and CBT
2. Name and describe the 6 core processes of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
3. Define psychological flexibility
4. Summarize at least 2 ways in which ACT integrates both the art and science of psychotherapy

About the Presenter

Annabelle Parr earned her Master’s in Counseling Psychology with an emphasis in Depth Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute, and is currently registered in California as an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist. Annabelle works as a therapist in private practice in San Diego, CA at both The Center for Stress and Anxiety Management (CSAM) and San Diego Psychotherapy Inc. In her clinical practice, Annabelle utilizes evidence-based practices including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to treat anxiety and related disorders. In addition to her clinical work, Annabelle enjoys writing blogs for CSAM, San Diego Psychotherapy Inc., and Staszak Therapy.
